FAQ

Ask us anything. We'll answer straight.

The basics

Is SueAnyone a law firm?

No. SueAnyone is a document-preparation and information service, not a law firm, and we don't give legal advice about your situation. You tell Sue what happened and we help you say it properly: a letter of demand and, if needed, the right claim for your court or tribunal. You decide, you sign, you lodge. Premium case analysis and the Hearing Simulator are reviewed by our partner law practice (subject to launch).

Do I need a lawyer to go to small claims?

Usually not. Small claims courts and civil tribunals across Australia are designed for people to represent themselves — several (like NCAT, VCAT, and the WA and Tasmanian minor claims courts) restrict lawyers unless you get permission. For complex matters, personal injury, or big sums, a lawyer is worth it.

What can I sue for?

Money someone owes you that you can put a number on: personal loans, unpaid invoices, bonds, dodgy tradies, car damage, faulty goods, unpaid wages, neighbour damage and more. We don't do family law, criminal matters, personal injury, defamation or estates — our checker will flag those and point you to the right help.

Pricing

How much does it cost?

All prices include GST. Lite is $49 for your letter of demand with unlimited revisions and a deadline tracker. Standard is $99 and adds the right claim or application for your court or tribunal, your sworn statement, a filing guide and a default-judgment pack. Premium is $129 and adds a full court pack, case analysis and the Hearing Simulator. Court fees are paid to the court; we show one all-in total before you pay us. Upgrade later and pay only the difference: $50, $30 or $80.

Are court fees included?

No — filing fees are paid straight to the court or tribunal and vary by state and claim size (for example, $64 at NCAT for consumer claims up to $10,000, or $199.50 at the WA Magistrates Court for minor cases). We show you the current fee for your claim. Fees can usually be added to what you claim back.

Do I pay before I see anything?

Nope. You build your whole case and see a blurred preview of your letter for free. Paying doesn't send a thing — it just unlocks your letter so you can read every word, revise it as often as you like, and send it when you're ready.

What about refunds?

If a document we generate is wrong, we fix it. Refund requests are handled under our terms (currently in draft pending legal review) and, always, your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which we can't and won't exclude.

The process

How long do they get to pay?

Your letter gives them 21 days (28 for Northern Territory debts; South Australia needs at least 21; 14 only with a good reason). Posted letters run from when they should arrive. We add 3 days' grace for transfers to clear, then your claim unlocks — day 24 for an emailed letter. You can send up to two reminders you approve, on day 14 and day 20. If they pay, hit 'Mark as paid'.

How does SueAnyone pick the court or tribunal?

Our forum finder looks at your state, the type of claim, who's suing whom (individual or business) and the amount. For example, a consumer-v-trader dispute in NSW goes to NCAT, but a personal debt goes to the Local Court Small Claims Division. It also warns you if you're over the limit, possibly out of time, or in the wrong forum.

Who sends the letter?

You do — it's in your name. You can download the PDF and send it yourself, or have us email it to the other party on your behalf. Letters in your own name are standard practice and keep things clean.

Do you file the claim for me?

We prepare everything field-by-field for your state's official form and portal (like the NSW Online Registry or the WA eCourts Portal) with a step-by-step filing guide. You lodge it yourself — that keeps you in control and keeps costs down.

How does the statement of claim get served?

After you lodge, you can order mail service through our posting provider. It's an optional paid add-on, charged at the provider's cost plus a small handling margin (15%), incl. GST, and quoted before you pay. Some courts can serve for you (e.g. NSW Local Court posts it for $56 per address). Your filing guide spells out the rules for your forum.

Premium

What is the Hearing Simulator?

Five practice hearings in front of a simulated decision-maker. You see the questions you're likely to be asked, the three strongest points on each side, your weakest evidence gaps and what swung the runs. We show a dollar range only if at least 4 of the 5 runs land close together — otherwise it says 'Too close to call'. No percentages, no scores, ever. A lawyer reviews it before you see it. It's a simulation to help you prepare, not a prediction or legal advice.

What's in the court pack?

A case summary, chronology, evidence index, the issues the decision-maker must decide, likely arguments from the other side and how to answer them, a hearing-day script and a what-to-bring checklist.

Trust & privacy

Is my information safe?

Your case data is encrypted in transit, access-controlled, and never sold. Evidence files are hashed (SHA-256) when uploaded so you can prove they haven't been altered. See our draft Privacy Policy for details.

Does AI write my affidavit or sworn statement?

No. That's the one document you write yourself. The NSW Local Court (Practice Note adopting SC Gen 23) and NCAT (Procedural Direction 7) say generative AI must not be used to write or rephrase affidavits, witness statements or statutory declarations, and VCAT (PNVCAT 11) requires AI use to be disclosed. We give everyone the same neutral guidance on what to cover and put your words in the court's layout, adding the no-AI disclosure where the forum requires it. Your letter of demand and claim form are AI-assisted drafts, clearly labelled, and you check every word.

Will the AI make stuff up?

We've built guardrails so it can't quietly invent facts: every dollar amount and date in your documents is checked against what you told us, and anything unsupported is flagged for you to fix. You also review every word before anything is sent.

Stop being nice about it.

Build your case free in about 10 minutes. Letter of demand first, statement of claim and court pack if they ignore it. Court-ready from $99 incl. GST.
