Step by step in NT

  1. Send a letter of demand. Give a clear deadline (we use 21 days). No mandatory notice, but a letter of demand is expected.
  2. Check the forum and the limit. The NT time limit for contract and most other claims is generally three years — half what most states give you. Don't sit on it.
  3. Prepare your claim. Form 1 — Initiating Application. Have your evidence numbered and ready.
  4. Lodge and pay the fee via NTCAT registry (online / email / post).
  5. Serve the other party. You serve the sealed Form 1 and NTCAT standard orders, usually within 7 days of issue (14 interstate), by personal delivery, email with a reply, or post with proof of delivery — then keep a declaration of service.
  6. Turn up prepared. Most hearings start with conciliation — be ready to settle on sensible terms.
  7. Enforce if you have to. An NTCAT order for money can be enforced through the Local Court.

Time limits

Contract and tort claims: generally 3 years in the NT (Limitation Act 1981 (NT) s 12) — shorter than elsewhere.

Special cases

  • Bonds & tenancy: Bond and tenancy disputes go to NTCAT.
  • Unpaid wages: Fair Work small claims can be run in the NT Local Court.

Local tips

  • Start with a Form 1 Initiating Application.
  • Fee waivers for hardship need a Form 8 declaration plus financial documents.
  • Fees are not refundable if you withdraw after the application is accepted.
